Components
In computer technology the term "hardware" or software" refers to a hardware upgrade replaces an older version with a fresher version that has additional features or functions. Upgrades are typically made to make the system more efficient and more reliable, or capable of handling greater amounts of data. Hardware upgrades can include storage devices, such as hard disk processors, drives, and motherboards. Upgrades to computers must be compatible with the specifications of the computer that is being upgraded.
In Guild Wars 2, upgrade items can be slotted into weapons, armor and trinkets in order to provide an attribute bonus or additional effect when the equipment is being used. To be able to accept a component, an item must have an upgrade slot and be at the appropriate level.
Components can be purchased from vendors in Night City or obtained by disassembling items that don't function. They can also be found randomly throughout the world. Unlike weapons and gear, components can be purchased from vendors even if they are not high-leveled or level-appropriate.
Various types of components exist, with universal upgrades (such as gemstones) which can be put in any equipment and offering less bonuses than those that are restricted to specific types. Jewels are only available in trinkets. They also offer a larger bonus than any other upgrade.

Inscriptions are also available, which are unique upgrade items that can be placed in a trinket, and can be used to create an experience multiplier. They are ideal for maximizing a character, as they're fairly inexpensive to purchase but they're not able to be combined with other experience modifiers.
Infusions can be added to non-ascended armor and legendaries and also to certain non-legendary items. They can be retrieved using an Infusion Extraction Device or salvaging them using the Ascended Salvage Tool. One thing to remember is that upgrading an item using infusions will cause the resulting item to have a unique name. For instance, adding a Rune of Minor Vigor to a Tyrian Armor will cause it to display the name "Radiant Tyrian Armor." In the hover display an inscription will show as an Inscribed weapon.

While the additional stats offered by an upgrade can assist the build, their effects aren't always the most beneficial. For example, a high dps breakpoint item may not benefit as much from being upgraded if there is already another flawless or nearly perfect unupgraded version of the same item (whistan's shield for FB sorcs springs to mind).
